VSO places skilled professionals into long term African and Asian volunteering placements that aim to fight poverty.

Placements are recruited for based on need and could fall within the following categories:

  • Advocacy policy and research
  • Agriculture and natural resources
  • Business, management and IT
  • Communications and fundraising
  • Community and social work
  • Engineering and technical
  • Facilities
  • Healthcare
  • Teaching and education

VSO will organise the bulk of travel, accommodation, all training and provide a living allowance. Some volunteers will need to contribute their own fundraising efforts towards the placement.

As a minimum, volunteers need at least three years’ experience within a field relevant to the placement (although sometimes significantly more experience is required), a degree or equivalent, as well as being fit and healthy to travel and carry out the work required.

Another option for 18-35 year olds is 10-12 weeks placements, offered through Youth Volunteering – either working as a volunteer or a Team Leader, depending on your age. Projects are designed to support the world’s poorest and most vulnerable communities on matters like youth development, unemployment, health and sanitation.
